On May 18, 2021 at approximately 5 p.m., a man was shot multiple times on the #14 bus while it was parked at the Robert K. Pfaff (RKP) Transit Center. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but did not survive. We extend our sympathies to the victim’s family and friends.
No other persons were physically injured. Our security team responded quickly and the shooter was apprehended; multiple arrests were made. We consider this to be an isolated incident and we are confident our buses and properties are safe spaces.
The Akron Police Department (APD) has METRO’s full cooperation in this ongoing investigation and we are working diligently to provide them with evidence and materials to aid them in their investigation. We are grateful for our longtime partnership with the APD, which allows us to support one another in creating safe spaces for our team and community members.
Our team members responded to this situation professionally and expeditiously. Although the incident resulted in service delays, we were able to restore service quickly. We are grateful to each and every team member who chooses to unselfishly continue serving our community, even when faced with challenges like this one.
We will continue assessing and strengthening our safety and security measures, both onboard our vehicles and on our properties. We have added additional law enforcement presence at the RKP Transit Center, and we are in the process of expanding our Transit Police Department.
